Estimated Time to Accomplish: 30-60 minutes
Are you looking to add website ads in specific places using Google Ads? Well I have two solutions that will help you plan exactly where your in-content ads are placed inside your post content using Google Adsense.
A Quick Summary:
When you use Auto Ads with Google Adsense (or other ad providers), sometimes your in-content ads land in the middle of your content and break up your paragraphs. Here are two solutions to help space out your in-content ads exactly where you want them.
What you need to know:
Auto In-Content Ads are high paying ad slots that earn well on desktop and mobile. If you choose Auto Ads, you will most likely earn the most for your articles. But, if you choose to place in-content ads where you want them, you focus more on the continuity of your content, and the user experience.
My recommendation:
If you want to earn the most money, choose Auto Ads with your ad provider. If you want to protect your content and user experience, take a little time to space out your in-content ads between your paragraphs. This might cut down on your earnings, because you might choose fewer ads with a controlled environment. So, choose what matters to you!

How to add website ads in specific places using Google Ads
1. Manually Space your Ads with an Ad Code Injector
This solution is a great way to manually add your in-content ads exactly where you want them. This solution works best for Google Adsense, not other advertisers.
The process includes a few steps to set up in-content ads for your whole site.
- Login to your Google Ads Account. If you don’t yet have an account or are approved, check out my other articles to set up your Adsense account.
- Turn OFF Auto-Ads in Google Adsense in their dashboard like this:
- Choose “By Ad Unit” instead of “By Site”
- Use the “Display Ads” button and create as many in-content ads as you want. Name them, save them as responsive units (not choosing ad sizes).
- Now, go to your website in WordPress and add the plugin Ad Inserter.
My Recommendation: I love the plugin Ad Inserter. I totally recommend it for adding head tags, email opt-in forms, code injections targeting specific HTML, etc. It’s super versatile, lightweight, and trustworthy. It is approved by Google here.
BE CAREFUL: If you install in-content ads this way manually, only use ONE CODE per ONE LOCATION TARGET. It is against Google policy to manually place one code in more than one location.
- For each ad unit, copy the Adsense code from Google Adsense and paste it into an Ad Inserter Block (found under Settings > Ad Inserter).
- Choose the location for this ad unit. I like to place my ads after a certain number of images. That way, longer posts with more images will load more in-content ads. The ads also tend to look clean near images and not break up paragraphs. This is what that looks like in Ad Inserter:
- Add as many in-content as as you want, after as many locations as you want. Make sure you only add one per post/page.
- Options inside of Ad Inserter: Targeting just posts/pages, targeting unique HTML specific locations (ie. after .wprm-recipe-container for WPRecipeMaker), and blocking of categories, tags) See more details here.
- You can also use this process to manually install in-content ads into your sidebar. A sidebar location counts as one location per one ad.
2. Update your posts to Group Paragraphs
This solution is a great way to group your paragraphs so Auto Ads do not interrupt your content. This solution works great for Google Adsense Ads and other advertisers, like Mediavine, Raptive, etc.
This process is a little more manual and requires editing per post after your ads are installed.
- After your ads are installed using Auto Ads by your advertiser, this is a solution you can use to customize the ads per post. I also recommend using this process for each new post that you write.
- Go into a specific post, and click the three lines at the top in your Gutenberg Editor. This opens up the list view of all the content in your article.
- Then, the goal is to group “like content” to prevent ads from displaying inside that group.
- Highlight the different sections of your post and highlight all the paragraphs, images, and items that you want to keep together.
- Inside of the highlighted items, click the three dots next to the top item like this:
- Make sure all your content is grouped so ad placements display between the groups.
- DISCLAIMER: The longer your groups are, the fewer ads can display, and the less money you will make. Make sure that you don’t hurt your ads earnings by doing this!
